I’ll be honest, this is going to be brief. I was the sickest I’ve been in ages and spent a lot of time in the Flagstaff cabin coughing, sleeping, and feeling loopy from prescription cough syrup and steroids.
I could rant about our horrific healthcare system, and how I had to find an in-network urgent care while out of state, and how the only option was two hours away in Phoenix and had really bad reviews. Luckily I found a telehealth option, got the meds I needed, and started slowly getting better. We’ll see what I get billed for that…(*rolls eyes*)
It’s been a few weeks and I still have a cough. My voice is almost back to normal. But I really can’t complain too much, because I was so lucky to have Jon to take care of me. Seriously, he went to the store so many times for me to get whatever might possibly make me feel better. And I’m glad he didn’t get this sick before his race.
I also got my Baby back! Shoutout to Flagstaff Collision Center for fixing all four mounting bolts and validating for me that it was incredibly strange, bewildering, and wrong of the detailing place in Aurora to have destroyed the bolts so badly and not tell me.
ADVENTURING
I was better just in time for us to travel from Flagstaff to Oakland (with a night in Needle, CA), then again to Lake Sonoma (we stayed in Windsor and hung out in Healdsburg mostly), and then again back to Denver (with a night in Wendover, UT).
Oakland was a highlight, as I got to visit my brother Gavin and his girlfriend Sureyma at their house, which I had never seen. My fur-niece Maeby eagerly greeted Jon and me at the door, their house is SO CUTE, and we got to try some local restaurants and Ghost Town Brewing.
We also went to Kokomo Winery near Lake Sonoma before heading home, thanks to my parents gifting their club members’ free tasting to us. The owner is a Purdue grad and the interior is heavily Komomo, Indiana-themed. I’d say it made this Hoosier feel at home, but Kokomo is a highly conservative small town I have no connection to. Plus, the only other guests there were a couple that included a guy in a black MAGA hat, so I wouldn’t say it was the most welcoming environment to me. But the wine was good and the weather was perfect, and it was a nice way to enjoy California before booking it home.
GEAR TESTING
Since I was so sick I fell behind on gear testing, but I did test out a Gregory Border travel pack while crewing for Jon’s race. The organization was great, but the zipper kept getting stuck and that stressed me out.
In other gear testing news, my review of the HOKA Clifton 10 went live today. This is particularly exciting since the shoes just dropped today, and it’s rare for Treeline to have reviews ready before a drop.
POETRY
Sadly, I was not selected for the Isle Royale Artist-in-Residence. Such a bummer. But I did see one of the teen artists selected was from my hometown of Fort Wayne, IN, so that was neat!
I am excited to read some poems at Tattered Cover Bookstore on Earth Day, though. The event is for Alyse Knorr’s book Wolf Tours, which is INCREDIBLE, and I’m honored and stoked she invited me to read with her.
Ok, I’m mega super behind on freelance work (and invoices!) so this is all I’ve got today. I spent hours catching up this morning and will be spending the rest of the day doing the same. Maybe I’ll make it to a grocery store if I’m lucky.
Best,
Becca
